In Parang, on the island of Jolo, Sulu, women weavers were hard at work weaving the Pis Syabit, the traditional cloth tapestry worn as a head covering the Tausug of Jolo. Darhata Sawabi was one of those who took the art of pis syabit making to heart.

02

The Pis or Pis Syabit, is a multicolored woven cloth of the Tausug – square in format, measuring 100 centimeters by 100 centimeters. It is traditionally worn by the Tausug men as headdresses or as clothing accessories – folded neatly and draped over the left shoulder and worn along with the ‘lapi’ or upper garments and the ‘sawal’ or loose trousers. The pis syabit symbolized the weaver’s elevated position in society.

03

Darhata Sawabi remained faithful to the art of Pis Syabit weaving. Her strokes were firm and sure, her color sensitivity acute, and her dedication to the quality of her art unwavering.
